Stop Windows Server 2012 from asking for shut down reason

So each time you go to shut down or restart Windows Server it asks you for a reason why… that can get a bit annoying after a while if all you’re doing is testing in a VM or you’re the only person using it.

Here is how to stop it from asking you!

  1. Go to start or press Windows + R and type gpedit.msc
  2. In Local Group Policy Editor you will see 2 groups on the left pane, Computer Configuration and User Configuration
  3. Under Computer Configuration expand Administrative Templates
  4. Click System and on the right you will see a list show…
  5. Look for Display Shutdown Event Tracker
  6. Open Display Shutdown Event Track
  7. Select Disable and then Apply and OK at the bottom

You should be good to go now.  It should no longer ask you why you’re shutting down or why you are restarting.
